I am always amazed at the unlimited supply of vintage photographs I am able to find through various channels. Charming photos of loved ones from the past, that some how got separated from their now ancestors. It's so easy for me to wonder how such a thing could happen. To allow my mind to search out the endless possibilities of what events transgressed to make these people essentially nameless in a sea of unwanted aging paper. To feel sorry for these unknown faces seems like such a silly thing- and yet, I can't help but wonder if a century from now my image will be just another unknown face in a sea of others.
I have descended from a long line of scholars, and it is likely this very reason I am able to trace our lineage back to the 1500's. Even more so that I have a family book containing photos of these people. I always take comfort in the fact that their faces are familiar to me. I have looked fondly upon their faces since I was a little girl, and while many of them had come and gone long before even my mother was born- I can remember each ones name as if it were my own. The tight smiles and beautiful clothing always seeming to come down to a untouchable art- especially in this day and age. Their is a certain beauty to each photo, the way every shot was carefully planned and posed as if they knew it would still be lovingly looked upon in the very distant future. I can only hope someone does the same for me.

Victoria,
ReplyDeleteHow blessed you are to have so much of your family history, to have faces with the names, to grow up "knowing" these ancestors. I especially like the photograph of the family on the front porch and what appears to be a grandmother with her daughter and grand-daughter.
I often consider the very same thing when I see stacks of old photos for sale at flea markets or in antique shows - who are these people and how did they end up here? - especially when it is obviously a formal portrait in an expensive frame with obvious signs of wealth in the photograph.
Your Friend,
Deborah
Victoria, the photograph of the little girl and the dog is wonderful!!! I love all of them, it's nice you know who they are. I agree with you about the photos in antique stores and flea markets, how sad to know that someone lineage is sitting there unclaimed. I have a stack of photos from my Mother's side of the family that we can't identify. After my Great Aunt died there was no one to name them. I won't get rid of them though, I know they are somehow connected to my family. I also love the picture of the family home in Nebraska, pictures of our ancestral homes are just as important because there is always a story that goes with them. People didn't move around as much as they do now and it's very likely that one of your relatives built that house (I know it is in my case!).
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Wednesday - I have the morning to myself (well as soon as a sleepy head wakes up so she can go to her Grandparent's house!).
Come see me!!!!
Kathy

I am SO with you on this! We were blessed enough (on the mother's side) to have at least some photos going back to the earlier days of photography. And, some very nice charcoals, too!
ReplyDeleteI always say that those will be pryed from my cold, dead hands. :-)
Victoria,
ReplyDeleteGreat post and wonderful old photos. A topic near and dear to my heart right now. My father inlaw passed in late March at 88.. He had a blessed life with a long marriage to my mother inlaw... We have been pouring over old photos for weeks. For the service we made 9 photo collage boards that depicted all the chapters of his life. I was amazing. We were all so inspired after the service. Although we miss him, his life of service and devotion to his family will live on for ever in our hearts and in all those photos! you are blessed to have faces to go with names, and a family history. It's fun and an education to look back!
